Edited messages
How Saksi labels edited WhatsApp and Telegram messages, what Message edited and Caption edited mean, and how to see what changed.
Last reviewed October 21, 2026
When someone edits a message and the app updates its notification, Saksi can keep both versions. It labels the record so you know how sure it is.
The labels
- Message edited: in WhatsApp and Telegram one to one chats, the notification showed clear proof of an edit. In some other messaging apps the same badge can appear for an unconfirmed change (see Other apps below).
- Caption edited: a proven edit to the text on a photo or video, in WhatsApp or Telegram one to one chats.
- Updated: the notification changed, but Saksi cannot prove it was an edit.
Saksi can keep the earlier version only if the app updated its notification when the message was edited. If you had the chat open, there was often no notification to update.
Where edits are detected
- WhatsApp one to one chats: proven edits are labelled Message edited or Caption edited. WhatsApp groups use the same handling but have not had their own test run.
- Telegram one to one chats: proven edits are labelled the same way.
- Telegram groups and channels: changes are shown as Updated, never as a proven edit.
- Other apps: Saksi saves the new text, but edit labels are designed for WhatsApp and Telegram. If another messaging app shows Message edited, it means the notification text changed; Saksi cannot confirm it was an edit.
- Social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, X and TikTok: changes are always shown as Updated, never as Message edited. See Social media and email notifications.
How to read change labels
Each label says how much Saksi knows, not what the sender did.
| Label | What Saksi saw | How sure |
|---|---|---|
| New | A message or notification it had not seen before | Certain that it appeared |
| Message edited in WhatsApp or Telegram one to one chats | The same message with new text and clear proof of an edit | Proven from the notification |
| Message edited in other messaging apps | The notification text changed | Not confirmed |
| Updated | The notification changed in a way Saksi cannot explain | Unknown cause |
| Thread | A summary such as "3 new messages", with no message text | Nothing to compare |
| Possible deletion (unconfirmed) | A message dropped out of the notification | A guess, not proof. See Deleted and disappeared notifications |
Updated is common and usually harmless. Apps often rebuild their notifications, for example when another message arrives or when the app reconnects.
