Deleted and disappeared notifications

What Deleted, Possible deletion, Dismissed and Cleared mean in Saksi, and why a disappeared notification is not proof of deletion.

Last reviewed October 21, 2026

Saksi keeps a copy of what your notifications showed. When a message later disappears from a notification, Saksi keeps what it saw and labels what happened as carefully as it can.

A disappeared notification is not proof

Saksi cannot see inside other apps. A message can vanish from a notification for many reasons. Only the Deleted label means the app itself said the message was deleted.

The labels

  • Deleted: the app's own notification said the message was deleted. Saksi kept what it saw before.
  • Possible deletion (unconfirmed): the message is no longer in the notification. This often means it was deleted, but it is not confirmed.
  • Dismissed: you swiped the notification away. This is not a deletion.
  • Cleared: the app or Android removed the notification. This is not a deletion.

The Deleted chip on the Timeline shows both confirmed and possible deletions.

When each label appears

Deleted appears only when the messaging app itself shows a deletion notice in its notification, such as WhatsApp's "This message was deleted". Saksi recognizes this notice in English and Indonesian today. In other languages a deletion is shown as a possible deletion at most.

Possible deletion (unconfirmed) appears for WhatsApp and Telegram one to one chats (WhatsApp groups use the same handling but have not had their own test run) when a message drops out of a notification while the rest of it stays the same. Saksi does not mark a possible deletion:

  • right after you dismissed the notification,
  • when the app reconnects and rebuilds its notification,
  • in Telegram groups and channels, where old posts rotate out all the time.

Other apps

Deletion labels are designed for WhatsApp and Telegram.

  • Deleted relies on WhatsApp's own deletion notice. Do not expect it for other apps.
  • Possible deletion (unconfirmed) can appear for another app that shows chats in Android's conversation style, such as some messaging apps. It has not been tested for those apps, so treat it as a hint only.
  • For social media and email apps, a notification often goes away because you read it in the app or on another device. Saksi keeps what it saved and does not treat this as a deletion.

See Social media and email notifications.

What you can see

Open the record. The detail shows the text Saksi saved before, with a heading Deleted or Possible deletion. For a possible deletion it adds: "This message is no longer visible in the notification. Deletion is not confirmed."

What Saksi cannot do

  • It cannot show a message that never appeared as a notification.
  • It cannot bring back a photo or file the notification did not provide. See Photos and files.
  • It cannot tell you why a message disappeared or what the sender did.
